Cold Stunned Iguanas in Florida
February 1, 2026, Pembroke Pines, Florida, USA: A cold stunned iguana lays on the ground in a neighborhood as temperatures dip into the 30s as a cold front makes its way across South Florida on Sunday in Pembroke Pines. Iguanas are tropical reptiles, so they’re ectothermic, meaning their body temperature depends on the environment. When Florida experiences unusually cold snaps (usually temperatures at or below the mid-40s°F / 7°C for several hours), iguanas can’t regulate their body temperature properly. This leads to 'cold-stunning,' where they become sluggish, stop moving, and can even appear dead. (Credit Image: © Matias J. Ocner/Miami Herald via ZUMA Press Wire)
